Fluffers
I know it seems strange, but this song is actually from a woman’s perspective and it’s about feminism. “Heaven’s more real than my hometown appeal, California, marijuana fear”. Small-town suburban girl, always wanted to move to Cali and get into show business. She finally does it and finds that a lot of women who move to California on their own to try and become actresses end up in porn. After witnessing countless instances of this phenomenon, over the years, she’s developed a firm, arguably aggressive feminist stance. A “fluffer” is an unfortunate soul, usually a girl though it could be a boy (or a horse, chicken, etc), who has the tragic job of “fluffing” or intermittently sucking the dicks of male pornstars before they fuck the female (or perhaps male) co-stars with their cocks that are nice and hard because they’ve been properly fluffed by the fluffer, assuming, of course, that the fluffer did a good job. But you already know all this. Our protagonist sees Fluffers as a metaphor for all women who are dependent on men. “As I sharpen my knives, all you fluffers and wives you abide”. As she worked her whole adult life to survive on her own, other women found men to take care of them and in doing so, they forfeited a part of themselves to their men. “Oh a despise, your safety and diamonds”, I despise your co-dependency, I despise these archaic notions of femininity like finding a man so he can give you “diamonds” and “security”, she’s saying. I despise how you further validate female stereotypes by giving your life to their implementation. The end is “and you stay the same, pleasing your big man cause you’re afraid”, “letting him erase you page, by page”, “forfeiting your person for his pay”. Once again, she thinks that even many married women are slowly being erased by their husbands and have wasted their potential by buying into the traditional role of females in society. They’re no better than pornstar fluffers.

lyrics

Heaven’s more real
Than my hometown appeal
California, marijuana, fear
Came here in search
Of honesty and work
Truth and boldness
Artistry sincere
He buys me a drink
Ill-attempted wink
Sits in his own smirk
Arrogant cheer
As I sharpened my knives
All you fluffers and wives
You obliged
Oh I despise
Your safety
And diamonds
